Sherri Waterman-Hopper: Smoke Dance Demo

  • Minneapolis American Indian Center 1530 East Franklin Avenue Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55404 United States (map)

Join us for a participatory Smoke Dance demonstration led by Sherri Waterman-Hopper (Onondaga Nation, Beaver Clan). Smoke Dance is a Haudenosaunee social dance that involves storytelling, quick footwork, and spins. Originally a war dance practiced by men to demonstrate their agility, stamina, and strength, in the last 70 years a graceful women’s dance style has since evolved.

The demonstration will feature Sherri as the MC, singer Travis "Huggy" John, and dancers Monique Powless, Lumhe "Micco" Sampson, Kenlyn Skye, and Mae Redeye.

This program is presented in partnership with the exhibition, performance, and community engagement project, A:gajë:gwah dësa'nigöëwë:nye:' (i hope it will stir your mind), by Rosy Simas (Seneca Nation, Heron Clan), at the Walker Art Center.

Don't miss the final week of the exhibition, closing July 5!
