Sherri Waterman-Hopper: Smoke Dance Demos • July 1 & 2, 2026, 6–7pm • Minneapolis
Join us for two participatory Smoke Dance demonstrations led by Sherri Waterman-Hopper (Onondaga Nation, Beaver Clan). Smoke Dance is a Haudenosaunee social dance that involves storytelling, quick footwork, and spins. Originally a war dance practiced by men to demonstrate their agility, stamina, and strength, in the last 70 years a graceful women’s dance style has since evolved.
Wednesday, July 1, 6–7pm, Minneapolis American Indian Center, 1530 E Franklin Ave
Thursday, July 2, 6–7pm, Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, 725 Vineland Pl
Both demonstrations will feature Sherri as the MC, singer Travis "Huggy" John, and dancers Monique Powless, Lumhe "Micco" Sampson, Kenlyn Skye, and Mae Redeye. The July 2 demo will be ASL interpreted.
This program is presented in partnership with the exhibition, performance, and community engagement project, A:gajë:gwah dësa'nigöëwë:nye:' (i hope it will stir your mind), by Rosy Simas (Seneca Nation, Heron Clan), at the Walker Art Center.
Don't miss the final week of the exhibition, closing July 5!
